Kyoko Okazaki in English: Pink and Helter Skelter
Kyoko Okazaki is a legendary Josei mangaka, and rightfully so. She has an incredible way of delving into the perversions of pop culture and society and pulling out heaping masses of id, naïveté, and vulgarity.
Pink is a story of love between two prostitutes who believe themselves to be cynical, but in reality are frightened and idealistic children at heart. The story revolves, in great part, around the strange existence of a crocodile in Tokyo.
Helter Skelter is the story of the perfect anti-heroine: a popular model who has had her entire body reconstructed and is beginning to decay, both physically and mentally. Beauty culture is on display in it’s true, monstrous form in this josei masterpiece.
Okazaki tells horrifying tales with a sense of whimsy that makes them truly seem real. An incredible read for anyone who is not afraid to be terrified.
